Family of 5 is traveling Europe for 3 weeks in Sept 2012. The rough plan is land in Paris, one week France, 1 week Switzerland, 1 week Slovenia and then flying out of Ljubljana via Frankfurt to Seattle. Entering Switzerland at Geneva, getting car and planned to be around Interlaken/Bernese Oberland area. The initial plan was 5 days in Switzerland and then head down to Venice for 1 full day and then on to Slovenia for 3 full days. What we are trying to figure out now is the best travel route through Switzerland for these 5 days and also best travel approach to ultimately get to Slovenia. It seems like we could drive car to Lugano and then train from there but that is almost a day travel. We planned to stop in Venice on route to Slovenia but now are wondering if it makes more time to skip this and just head staight to Slovenia. This would either allow more time there are Switzerland. However, if we are going to do that is their a better place to leave Switzerland or then I was even considering flying. Thanks for any thoughts.
From Lucerne or Interlaken, take the route south to Milan. You could stop in Verona and look around, but I suggest you stay in Caorle or Bibione (NE of Venice) for the night. The beach towns will be a nice little break. Then you can head into Slovenia the following day. If you want to stay in a bigger town, Trieste is also a lovely town. Venice is an awesome city, but depending on traffic can be hard to get in and out of. There is a really big car park by the cruise ship terminal, so if traffic is fine, park there for the day and have a look around Venice.
