I am tring to choose the best train route to take to travel from Stuttgart, Germany into Italy. Ultimately I will be staying a week in Venice, but I have three or four days to get there coming from Stuttgart. It is also possible to take a different route returning back to Stuttgart. Any suggestions?

You are very lucky, as you will be going through Switzerland on the way from Stuttgart to Venice. Stay there! Get Rick's book or poke around Internet to get some information, so that you can make an informed decision where to go - cities or mountains. Three or four extra days is a lot of time to see yet another country. Sounds like a wonderful trip to me.
