We are planning to travel from Lake Brienz (we are by Brienz station) to top of Jungfraujoch. Need some advice. Would like to get the whole experience. Beable to see the Ice Palace. Take the train, cog wheel etc. Hopefully hike the Kleine Scheidegg. Thanks for your help
Lake Brienz is quite beautiful. You can buy your round trip ticket to the Jungfraujoch (train station up there) at the Brienz train station. You then simply take the train to the Interlaken Ost train station where you will change trains to the very nice and scenic Jungfraubahn train into Lauterbrunnen. At Lauterbrunnen, you will change to the cog train. At Kleine Scheidegg, you will change to a second cog train for the final leg. The trip from Brienz will take 3hrs.
Thank you so much. So we will try to catch the 1st train out in the morning (weather permiting). Can you tell me once we are at the top that is where the Ice Palace is? Also isnt there a restaurant up there? Also would this be the time to visit Tummelbach Falls. Any suggestions you have would be appreciated. We are trying to decide which pass to purchase it is between the half fare card of the swiss flexi pass. We will decide this week as the buy one get one will be ending. Also we will be traveling in early October. Thanks for your help
Wait until you see the complex that the Swiss built up there. It's really something. I've heard that the entire area up there can accomodate up to 700 people but I doubt that nowhere near that population are up there at any one time. There are shops and as I recall there are at least 2 restaurants. We had lunch at the nicer one. The price wasn't too bad. My wife had a bottle of Rugen Brau Lager Hell, a local beer. We were up there for about 4 hours. You'll see signs for the ice palace. I would suggest a jacket and hat for the walk through the palace. It's cold in there. Plus, you may need it when you go outside to walk around up there. Then, there's the sphinx. Not the one in Egypt either. Google Sphinx Jungfraujoch and you'll see a picture of it. You can take the elevator up to the top of the Sphinx.
Larry thanks so much. I am right there with your wife. I try to drink a local brew everywhere we go. Both my husband and I enjoy that. I can not wait to get there. October seems so far away.
Cheryl you could make a round trip ascending via Grindelwald under the north wall of the Eiger and returning via Wengen and Lauterbrunnen and going to the Trumelbach Falls unless you decide to the hike then I suggest going from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidgegg so that you are walking towards the view. Retuen from Interlaken via boat to Brienz for some relaxation.
Or if you would like to incorporate a short incredibly scenic hike, take the cable car from Wengen to Mannlichen, or the gondola from Grindelwald to Mannlichen, and walk to Kleine Scheidegg to catch the train up the Jungfraujoch from there.
Ooops-I didn't notice Pauline already recommended the walk from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg. That is the right direction, with the view in front of you. There is a nice place toneat on the left before you reach KS. Great view, and much better food and prices than the places up at Jungfraujoch.
