I have 3 nights in Granada (2 full days) in the middle of October, and I'm trying to decide on the best day and time to visit the Alhambra. Should I go in the morning or wait till after 2pm and be there for the afternoon/early evening? I've heard the grounds are spectacular in the evening. Also, would it be better to explore the city on my first day (and get great photos of the sunset and Alhambra from the square) and save the actual visit to the Alhambra for the next? Thanks!!
I guess I meant that area in the Albayzin to see the Alhambra...? Anyway, maybe I will just go in the morning of my first day and spend the rest of my time exploring the city. Thanks for the tips!!!!
1- the Alhambra is very high up above the city, so I don't know how many great photos of it you will get from the square down below. 2- when to go...any day...sunny ones are better and there should be plenty of sun in October 3- when during the day...mornings are less crowded but Southern Spain in October is uncrowded anyway. Evening visits are only on Friday and Saturday after mid-month. TWRFS in the first half. 4- check the schedule. in mid-October the opening hours change (reduced hours) and the ticket window closes 1 hour before the visits have to end. 5 - here is their website: http://www.alhambra-patronato.es/index.php
Personally, I like the softer light of morning to visit the Alhambra. You should also be able to get some nice photos of the "back side" of the Alhambra from the Generalife. * From the Albaycin, the best spot to get evening photos of the Alhambra from the plaza in front of the Church of San Nicolas. Go up before it gets too dark, and you might also get some nice shots of the Alhambra with the Sierra Nevada in the background.
I also vote for the morning slot. That gives you as much time there as you wish. I think you must enter all ticketed areas by 2:00 but you can wander the grounds and gardens and shops all day if you wish. There are a few places to eat lunch too. Don't forget to enter the palace within the half hour window you are assigned. If you miss it, the guards are not sympathetic. It probably doesn't matter if you do the Alhambra on the first or second day.
I agree with the suggestion to visit in the morning so you can spend more time there. We actually packed a light lunch and picnicked in one of the gardens. I'd go on the first day so that you can go back on the second day to the unticketed areas if you feel like you want to see more.
With 3 nights, I would visit it twice[INVALID]once at night, and once in the day. The Nazrim Palace is really magical at night. ¶ There are as you say great views of the Alhambra from Pl. San Nicolas in the Albaicin district. We watched the sun set there, grabbed a quick dinner in the Albaicin & caught a taxi to the Alhambra in time for our evening visit. Returned the next day for the whole thing. Really, really worth the extra expense.
Thanks all. Looks like the decision has been made for me, as there don't seem to be morning tickets available for either day I am there. The only open slot with 2 tickets is at 13:30. This leave me with a question. I know that ticket time means I have to enter the Nazaries at 13:30 (1:30). But can I wander around everything else before that, as long as I make sure I am at the Palace at the specified 13:30 time? I will definitely take your advice and see the Palace at night as well. Seems too good to pass up!!
Kara, yes you can wander the grounds and see the other three ticketed attractions before entering the Palace at 1:30. Give yourself as much time as possible in the morning to see everything else before your 1:30 entry time. Enjoy.
This is a great time. 1:30 is still really a morning visit because it means you will have to enter all the ticketed areas before 2 pm. Once you enter the Nazrid Palaces, you can stay as long as it takes you to finish. I'd try to get there first thing in the morning so you can be leisurely. Look at their map online to think about your route through the area a little. I'll emphasize again the idea of packing a light lunch, because I know I'd be really hungry if I didn't eat until after the Nazrid Palace tour. Even if you just have a little snack to tide you over, you can take better advantage of your time than if you need to take a long break for lunch before 1:30 pm.
We loved Granada and my husband had wanted to see The Alhambra since reading about it elementary school. We did the morning tour. And then we also booked an evening tour. The evening was magical. If you have time, I highly recommend doing both.
What are the hours for a night visit? Is this an extension of an afternoon visit into the evening? how late can one stay? Rick's book also mentions a moonlight visit but only the palace is open, from 22:00 to 23:30. Is that what people are referring to when they say "night tour"?
