We have point to point tickets from Milan to Interlaken but once we get that far, I think we have to buy some sort of swiss tickets or swiss pass to get to murren. can anyone suggest the best ticket or pass choice? We will be in murren for 4 days before going to Paris.
If you just need point-to-point tickets from Interlaken to Murren, simply purchase them at the station in Interlaken. There are also some excellent national and regional passes for Switzerland that can save you a lot of money, for a complete run-down head to the "railpasses" section of this website.
Thank you. I'm checking out the railpass part now!
The best part of the Swiss pass is getting discounts on the cable car rides. The cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Murren is free with the pass, and the cable car from Murren to the Stilthorn is 50% discount I believe. Combined with the train travel we really got our money's worth from those passes.
Elodie (or Melodie?), in Italy, the Italians will only sell you a ticket to Interlaken Ost. Trenitalia can't even pull up Lauterbrunnen or Muerren on their systems. The reason is - The Swiss want to be paid in Swiss Francs for this part of the journey. We went through this coming from Venice.
It's OK. Make sure that you are booked to Interlaken Ost. When you get there, walk into the ticket office and purchase the remainder of your journey. You can pay with your credit card or with Swiss Francs. Walk over to track 2A and 22 minutes later, you are in Lauterbrunnen (frequent local trains). Then you take the gondola and cog train up to Muerren. Very easy.
Want Swiss Francs? When you change trains at Spiez, you have about 12-16 minutes before the connecting train into Intelaken. Run around to the other side of the train station (it's not a big station) and there's an ATM. It dispenses Swiss Francs. We did this. Have fun.
