I'm planning to see some sights in SE France in June incl pont du gard but only by public transp. Pls don't suggest I rent a car. I want to see Avignon, p du g, Carcassonne, ride the Little Yellow Train, and take a scenic train btwn Nimes & Clermont-Ferrand. Is Nimes a good point to use as a jumping off point for most of that or is another city near there better? I should add I've seen the Nimes arena already (fantastic!!!) so being IN Nimes for that isn't really a factor.
Pont du Gard is about a half hour drive from Avignon. I've read on Trip Advisor that regular public bus service connects the two. From Avignon you can get to Carcassonne and Perpignan (for LYT connection) by regular train service.
Based on your logistical consideration of not using a car I wouldn't waste time on a trip to Carcassone. I found it to be a tourist trap, not historically built and the rest of the city isn't very interesting. The Pont du Gard on the other hand is very worthwhile and there are other very interesting towns close by and accessible. From a base in Avignon. I would also consider a group tour.
Darn! Every once in a great while Richard gets it exaclty right. :)
Right about what?
Ed,
Even a broken clock is right twice a day. :)
I'll second (or third) Richard's advice, including Carcassone.
With respect to Richard, I have to disagree about Carcassone. We went there and absolutely loved it. We drove, which was easier, but I would have gladly dealt with the hassles of the train/bus to get there. I guess it is personal preference. Avignon is easy to get to via train. Pond du Gard was amazing as well. Not sure how to get there via public transport, but if you can figure it out, you should go there for sure.
There are buses to the PdG from both Nimes and Avignon, so from that point of view either would be suitable. Avignon is a sort of transportation hub, but (a) less so for the stuff you list and (b) is connected to Nimes by short, frequent rail anyway. I am not familiar with this "scenic train" from Nimes. Is this a private rail like the one from Nice to Digne? Certainly that's a reason to stay in Nimes, but Avignon (and for that matter Arles) are close by frequent trains so it is not decisive. Ditto the "little yellow train," if that is out of Nimes. Carcassone as a day trip in June would be the worst possible way to see the place. If you visit you should plan to spend the night, and enjoy it in the evening and morning, otherwise skip it. If you like the Roman antiquities do not miss the Theater in Orange (also on the rail line, north of Avignon). The antiquities in Arles are also pretty great but might feel redundant versus those in Nimes. It depends on your schedule and level of interest. Arles a charming town.
I wonder about Uzes as an option. I love the market there, and it's probably the closest of all. Surely there are tours run out of there. . .but maybe I'm not helping by throwing in an additional option!!
I like Kim's suggestion of Uzes. A great little town, and close to the PDG.
I liked Nimes a lot, and the bus to and from Pont du Gard was easy.
