I know my husband would like this Bavarian specialty if we can find a good one. We will be in Bamberg one night and Munich one night. I would prefer to find a place in Bamberg if possible, as our daughter will be with us in Munich, fresh off the plane from a long flight, and probably won't feel like eating anything that heavy. But I suppose if we could find a nice place to sit outside (i.e., a Biergarten), she could order something lighter while my husband indulges. Any recommendations?
I had a pretty good Schweinhaxe at the Zum Augustiner Bierhall in Munich (just down the street from Marienplatz. Here's a hint... tastes best when smoked. Otherwise, it's a rather dry and tough piece of meat.
Lola, are you on the train, as usual? If you had a car I'd suggest Andechs Monastery southwest of Munich, doable by S-Bahn and walk but easier by car. Neat biergarten stuff, tasty. The word is that the bier is decent too. Sorry can't help with Bamberg. We were moving quickly there and ate schnell imbiss.
My favorite scheinhaxen in Munich was in the Augustiner Braukeller on Landsberger Strasse. It's in the opposite direction of where the tourists head, which means good prices, full of locals - so popular with them, in fact, I'd advise reservations. I haven't been there yet, but the Augustiner Keller on Arnulfstrasse (on the other side of the train tracks from the previous restaurant) is recommended by RS and has a biergarten. In general, any of the Augustiner outlets have reliably good food at fair prices, although obviously a little more expensive in Marienplatz area than in outlying areas. Not specifically for schweinhaxe, but if you want seriously great Bavarian food with a gourmet touch, Andescher am Dom is fantastic. I only had one meal in Bamberg, and it was decent but not amazing. I was more focused on the Rauchbier there, anyway.
Yes, traveling by train, at least in Germany. We will pick up a car when we get to the Dolomites. (And come to think of it, I saw some pretty nice Schweinshaxen on the half-board menu of a hotel up on Alpe di Siusi, so that's an option, but I think we'd rather eat Italian once we get to italy). My kids recommended Andechs as well (just say the word and my son starts drooling) but that is farther than I want to go. The Augusteiner Keller just might work---I had a look at photos of the Biergarten, and it looks nice. The menu offers "1/2 knusprig Schweinshaxe vom Grill mit Kartoffelknödel (5)" and also has some nice-looking salads, or Zanderfilet which I always enjoy.
Thank you! Now I am getting hungry. James, I will check out the place in Bamberg. Is Kalbshaxe as good as the pork version? Looking at reviews on Tripadvisor, it seems there are lot of really good places to eat in Bamberg. . . and I have to pick just one!
