We will be leaving Paris by train and arriving in Amboise for 2 days in the Loire Valley. The rest of our time in France we want to spend in Provence and along the coast of Southern France. Do we need to take a train back to Paris before heading south? Does anyone have suggestions for the best route between the Loire Valley and the Cote d'Azur? Thanks!
The train back through Paris is a long haul but probably your quickest route, because the TGV as far as Marseilles is so much faster than driving.
Driving in my view is only a good option if you are interested in stopping enroute and exploring a little, making it a Michelin-style road trip. Otherwise it is more grueling than the train and a poor use of your vacation time.
Hi, Kristi, just saw your post and don't know if you've already gone. If not, we chose to take the high speed train back to Paris from Amboise and then from Paris to the south. It was a long day, but looked like the fastest route to us.
P.S. I'll trade you a stay in Manhattan Beach for a stay in Healdsburg!
You could do the reverse of what I did and take a train from the Loire Valley and go to Carcasonne for a night or two and then off to Provence.
