Best round-trip, two-week itinerary from Frankfurt to Valladolid, Spain

My husband and I are trying to cram a ridiculous amount of town-hopping into our 15-day trip to Europe in April. We have two objectives: check out towns near big cities where we'd like to live someday AND catch a soccer game in Valladolid, Spain, exactly halfway through the trip.

We're pretty sure we'd like to live someplace in France or Benelux; maybe Spain. We're not city people but not hicks, either. A rural town close enough to a medium-size or big city for a daily work commute would be ideal. I'm a gardener, so I've got to have enough space and breathing room for a good-size veggie garden. Would any of the towns in Provence fit this criteria? What about the Netherlands or Belgium? Anyplace near Barcelona?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

I don't see an itinerary outlined, Harry, so how do you know the "whole itinerary" is ridiculous? How many towns do you intend to check out? And unless your company will provide you with a work visa you might have trouble with your plan to live and work in Europe. If you don't have tickets already for a particular game (your other post) why is Valladolid so crucial?

Valladolid is IN Spain and has a very nice regional airport that is served by several budget airlines. Depending on how many places they want to stop on this trip, it might be perfectly doable if they want to fly some of it. Cory, give us details about your plans and we can give you better feedback.

To answer your questions:

  1. We don't need to sightsee in each town; we just want to get a (very brief) "feel" for the place -- a first impression to add or cross each place to our list. Those towns/cities that make the list will get a follow-up visit in another trip. I realize that we'll be making our decisions based on very little exposure, but that's how I've picked where to live or vacation in the U.S., and it's worked for me.

  2. We've got to go to the Valladolid-Barcelona game, because my husband is a huge FC Barcelona fan. Huge. (That's the only decent Barcelona game during the time we'll be there.) He's also an Arsenal fan, so our first choice was to go to an Arsenal game in London, but the Chunnel tickets added hundreds of dollars to the price of the game.

Thanks for your advice!

You might want to check the Deutsche Bahn website. I just got an ad from them yesterday, they will be having sale - Frankfurt to London for 49 €. I think it takes 6 hours. Worth a look anyway.

So...what cities/towns are you thinking about? And how will you get past the visa requirement to be able to live there?

I'm not worried about the visa at this point; one of us will likely get a job with a multinational corporation or the United Nations or similar.

We'd love suggestions for towns near these cities, if any that meet our basic criteria (posted earlier) come to mind:

  • Brussels
  • Amsterdam
  • Lyon
  • Avignon
  • Montpellier
  • Paris

Thanks!

Cory,
Why not try Haarlem? Beautiful little town just minutes from Amsterdam by train. I stayed there instead of Amsterdam because it was cheaper and loved it. Very nice little restaurants, market, etc.
Good luck on getting all of your "wish" list in!
