My wife and I are visiting Provence at the end of April, staying in Avignon. We have a day to either visit St Remy and Les Baux or drive east to see Roussillon and Bonnieux. Any preferences/suggestions? Thanks very much!
The Luberon would be my choice. The perched villages are very pretty. There are numerous good restaurants for a lunch. Château La Canorgue below Bonnieux is the pretty winery used as the setting in the film A Good Year. Sénanque Abbey near Gordes is worth a visit. Get Michelin Green Guide to Provence.
St. Remy.... my favorite town to stay in Provence. Great town to visit, especially Market Day. Also Les Baux (very touristy) but I was there after all the tourists left and had a great time. Roussillon is definitely a nice town, but I prefer Gordes and the Abbey is wonderful...great photo ops.
Best Road Trip in Provence???? pretty much any road you decide to drive on will lead you through incredible countryside and wonderful destinations.
You've got a good start with St. Remy and Les Baux. If you have the time, I would suggest Luberon and especially Lourmarin and Gordes. These are two of the most beautiful villages in France. We had a wonderful lunch in Lourmarin. Free parking too.
One vote for St. Remy, but not as much for the town as for the amazing Van Gogh visit/exhibit at the asylum where he spent so much time and produced such incredible work. There are easels set up to show images of his works at the spots where he painted them. Irises, olive trees, almond trees in bloom, fields as seen from his asylum window, cypress trees. So many brilliant works and you can see exactly what he saw 130 years ago.
