Best plan for The Louvre and 1st Sunday

I was all set to get a museum pass for our visit in July but then I saw that many museums are free on the first Sunday of the month and that is when wewill be there. I'm considering going to The Louvre on our first night there which is Friday night ( is that a good idea?) We plan to do Versailles on Saturday. So....should we still purchase the museum pass or are there other ways to avoid the long lines?

The Louvre on a Friday night is great! Much lighter crowds and it's very different from the daytime when it's lit and you can see the lights of the beautiful city out the windows.

I second Anita's comments. We just got back from Europe, and we went to the Louvre on a Friday night too. We were there at the beginning of May, so I don't know what the crowds might be like in July, but it was fabulous! Keep in mind that they start closing down wings earlier than closing time, so see what you are really interested in first. We did purchase the Paris Museum Pass, and for us it was great. But, we were there for 5 days, and we were able to go back to the Lourve, which we did, because we didn't get enough the first time :). Versailles' lines were awful, and that was just for security. Just being able to skip the ticket line there, so we didn't have to wait in both, was fabulous! When we left Paris, we all commented on how glad we were to have the passes, but if those are your only two sights, perhaps not worth it. Good luck!

The Louvre is open late on Friday and Wednesday night if memory serves me right. We spent a month in Paris last time there (in July) and went several times in the evening... it was practically empty and not one single person was in front of the Mona Lisa. I would only go to the Louvre in the evening when it's open late. I would never go on a free Sunday when it will be more packed than ever.

You can get a Versailles ticket ahead of time through the FNAC either on line or at one of their stores.
