Best places to stay and see in Picardy, Alsace & Moselle.

Discovered my ancesters are from these areas. I would be interested in doing 2 to 3 weeks. Maybe combo speed train and driving? And of course we will visit Paris.

We really enjoyed Colmar as a base for Alsace. Easy train to Strausborg for a daytrip and car drives to the wine towns. Colmar has lovely half-timbered buildings and a bit more substance to enjoy in the evenings than the smaller towns. We enjoyed our stay at Hotel St Martin and there was an easy parking lot really close by. Love Alsace!

I enjoyed staying in Beilstein on the Mosel River. Fairy tale like village nr the river locks. Do not miss Burg Eltz while in the Mosel area.

Kathleen, You're going to two of my favourite regions in France. The main city in the Picardie is Amiens, can't recommend a specific place to stay since I've only been there on day trips from Paris or Arras in the Pas-de-Calais area. Amiens on the Somme is a charming city, historical and well worth visiting. Leave for Amiens from Gare du Nord, no need to reserve since it's regular train. In Alsace I would suggest staying in Strasbourg around the train station, where numerous 2-3 star hotels dot the area. I stayed there twice in 1997 and 1999. From Strasbourg-Paris Est the TGV gets you there in 2 and 1/4 hours. I've taken this route the last time as a day trip. From Paris-Est just walk over to Gare du Nord to go to Amiens.

If you took the train to Strausborg and wanted to drive back to Paris...which route (cities and sites) would take?
