Best place to stay in Switzerland to ski and see site in Jan-Mar 08

I am planning a trip to skiing and site see in January to March, 2008. Where is the best location to stay? Is renting a car a good idea or not? What's special to see in the winter period in Switzerland and Austria? Should I be thinking of all the Alps (France/Italy) too? How to pack light?
