what would be the best place to stay along the Rhine river in Germany? I was thinking of staying in Bacharach, but previously we will be in Paris and it is a long ride from there to Bacharch due to the 3 connections.
I guess my best advice would be get used to connections. Connections by rail are not anywhere as difficult as connections by air. Often you get off one train and step across the platform to the next one.
Agree that you will not find "connections" much of an issue most of the time..... We stayed at Mainz, St Goar and Bacharach in May 2009. They were all nice stops with different advantages. We liked St Goar best as it was right on the river. I was mesmerized watching the river traffic from the dining room of our hotel.... We had our best rooms in the Pension am Malerwinkel in Bacharach.
Bacharach is a good choice, we stayed there for 2 nights this past summer and really enjoyed it!
St. Goar is only slightly closer, but it's in a more scenic part of the river gorge and 3 castles are visible. There's also a ferry boat there to help you reach Marksburg Castle, the best castle to tour along the Rhine, more easily. Just shuttle over and walk a few blocks north to the train station, where you catch a train north to Braubach. www.marksburg.de
I love Bacharach. You could poss consider flying to Frankfurt on a low cost airline. But connections are really quite easy in Europe.
We were just in Bacharach 2 weeks ago, wonderful place to stay on The Rhine.
Melissa,
I'd also suggest Bacharach. I was there a few months ago and it's a wonderful, smaller town. It has good transportation via rail or boats, and a fairly good selection of Hotels and restaurants. Check the Guidebook for details.
