Best lodging in Bacharach

I will be visiting Bacharach and just need a simple B&B but I really want a big, German breakfast! Has anyone had any great experiences?

I haven't stayed in Bacharach but you want to be away from the train tracks by at least a couple of blocks.

We just got back from the Rhine and thought that the Pension im Malerwinkel in Bacharach was the bargain of the trip. Good sized room, big breakfast, nice folks and our cheapest stay. It was < 5 min from the middle of the village. It was so quiet that we could hear the stream from our 4th floor bedroom.

Hotel Malerwinkle is located in a wonderful area of Bacharach. What we discovered is that Bacharach is a little less exciting than St. Goar. We stayed in St. Goar at Hotel Hauser with a room with a balcony that overlooks the river. If you want a quiet area that is near a beautiful wooded hill- definately Hotel Malerwinkle. If you prefer a river view with Castle Katz and the town of St. Goarhausen lit up at night, try Hotel Hauser in St. Goar.

For great shopping, I would like to recommend a wonderful shop in St. Goar. It's called the Romantic Rheine Shop. It's across the street from the Koln-Dusseldorfer boat port. It's run by a wonderful German couple - Dietmar and Andrea. Ask for a sample of their eiswine and peach brandy - it's definately worth buying. They will also give you documents for the VAT refund.

Enjoy your trip!

We agree with Cara that St Goar was a better stay. We stayed at the Hotel am Markt in St Goar and much enjoyed a rainy afternoon glass of wine, etc. as we watched the river traffic.

We stayed at the Kachel bed and breakfast in Bacharach and it was great. A little bit of a walk up the road from the main town, but it was a good price, modern and clean. Breakfast was the typical German breakfast setup.

Ingrid the owner was great to have a glass of wine with and a chat.

I agree with Cara on everything she said. You must go the shop across from the KD dock.

I thought that Im Malerwinkel was in a delightful setting, possible one of the most beautiful I've seen, but there is one reason I would not stay there, or anywhere else in Bacharach.

Most of the area on the Rhein and the Mosel, from Oberwesel, between Bacharach and St. Goar, down the river to Linz and Remagen, almost to Bonn, and up the Mosel as far as Bullay, is in the Verkehrsverbund-Rhein-Mosel. The VRM offers a group day ticket for up to five people for €20. If you wanted to go down to Koblenz from Bacharach, you would buy a Bahn ticket for €8,40, so round trip would be €16,80. For two it would be €33,60. Of course, at that point, if you knew what you were doing, you would buy a €27 Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket. However, if you were in St. Goar, you could buy a VRM Minigruppenkarte for €20, for a round trip to Koblenz for up to five people.
