Best (Least Expensive) Way to travel Spain & Portugal

Please help if you can! My daughter is traveling with a friend : Barcelona to Granada to Lisbon to Madrid. She's busy studying (as she should be!) & is tearing her hair out perusing multiple sites & tons of processing fees. Do they need to make reservations? Better to travel by bus or 2nd class train or ---? Day or night make a difference? Thanks a lot for any assistance provided! Oh, p.s., she's leaving SOON!

Only one train Barcelona-Granada, an overnight train that costs about 55 euro sitting up..about 11 hours. Buses are actually more expensive (surprising for Spain) and take about as long. May I suggest she fly this leg. clickair.com and vueling.com, both Spanish discount carriers, offer the run for 20-60 Euro each, depending on which day and flight you choose...but book them ASAP! Is she going to Sevilla? I hope so...much more interesting than Lisbon ;). If so, then bus or train Granada-Sevilla...the bus is cheaper. IF she wants to go to Lisbon from there, then the bus is the only way to go...a loooong trip. If she decides NOT to go to Sevilla, then I would suggest she take the bus Granada-Madrid (a lot cheaper, and almost as fast, 5 1/2 hours), then fly Madrid-Lisbon. vueling.com and easyjet.com do this route...again, the sooner you buy, the cheaper the price. There's only one train Madrid-Lisbon, an overnighter at about 9 hours, and two daytime buses, 6-7 hours, at 44 Euro. (more)

I have to say I've done it my car a a few times and it was great and not terribly expensive--especially if reserved from the U.S. I think it's the best way to experince some smaller things...

My wife and I used busses all over spain last christmas. They were great! Often the bus is faster than the train and sometimes more centrally located than the train station. The only "bad" thing was listening to the reading of numbers during the christmas lottery for 4-5 hours on the madrid-granada route ;?)
