Hi all, We are planning a trip to Germany in October and would love some insight on the best road trips and towns to spend some time in. We are starting in Berlin where we will stay for three nights. Then we have 5 days to drive and explore, ending in Munich where we will stay for three nights as well. We have read lots about the Romantic road and Wine road...but am not sure which towns to stay in/ stop and explore. We don't want to be driving every day either. Any tips would be great! Thanks,
I suggest you buy a copy of Frommer's "25 Great Drives in Germany". The vast hinterland between Berlin and Munich doesn't get a lot of coverage in many guidebooks, but this one is an exception. I've learned that the German Ferienstraßen (roughly, "Touring Routes"), of which you mentioned the Wine and Romantic Roads, for the most part aren't intended as scenic drives, but rather routes that link together sites of similar themes. For example, the Deutsche Weinstraße isn't much more impressive for a drive than the Autobahn that runs parallel to it, but it provides easy access to a number of interesting towns. And by the way, the Deutsche Weinstraße is far out of your way.
Thank you! I will look into that book. I already have Rick Steves Germany 2011- but I sounds like the other book has some great routes as well. We just want to liesurly explore the area, stay is small towns etc yet start in Berlin and End in Munich. Looks like it would be a 5 hour drive to the Wine road -so we may have to chart out our own route!
Some of the lesser known "Roads" might suit your travels better than the worn out and too touristy Romantic Road. Check out the Fairy Tale Road or the Fachwerk Road for starters. Visit towns like Quedlinburg, Marburg, Steinau, Idstein, or Büdingen.
