Best German Castles

Wow. I like Neuschwanstein because it is an icon of Germany. Even though unfinished, it is beautiful inside - the bed room with the carved wooden bed, the study, the throne room. But it was not a real castle. It was created as a fantasy by an over-romantic dreamer. Hohenschwangau, although not much older than Neuschwanstein, was a working castle - Lugwig lived there as a child. My wife liked Hohenschwangau better. But I can't get over the fact that Neuschwanstein is such a symbol of German. I'd go there.

Both are great. But, if you can only visit one, it should be Neuschwanstein. After all, it the iconic German, fairy tale castle. The Magic Kingdom is based upon it. Everyone knows it. While unfiinished, it is spectacular. Even just to share the glimpse of the wall mural with Falkenstein atop the hill and to imagine what could have been, while surrounded by the oppulence of Neuschwanstein in the moment. Imagine Wagner's opera in the opera room, or the meals prepared in the kitchen, or the work that went into the grand bed. Hohenschwangau may have a more informative tour, but there is only one Neuschwanstein. You'll regret it if you miss it.

no question: Neuschwanstein Yes, it's touristy, but heck, it is an icon. Gotta see it. And btw - you have a nice view of Hohenschwangau from Neuschwanstein.

I liked Neuschwanstein a little better. The overall Wagner thematic approach of basing it on Wagner's operas I found more fascinating.

Neuschwanstein. BUT, if you get time, Herrenchiesmee (Ludwigs castle on an island) and Linderfof (his hunting castle) are incredible also. And if you get over by the Mosel, Eltz castle is a hidden gem. I thought I had stepped into Camelot.
