Would like information on the most interesting drive from Bordeaux to Sarlat and how long it takes. Any good online maps for this drive? Janet
Janet, I'll let you know for sure in a few weeks as I will be making that trip soon. I have a GPS and all afternoon to make what seems like a two hour drive so I plan on stopping along the way. I might get off the main roads and or set the GPS to "avoid tolls" just to take a more scenic route. The other consideration is what day of the week will you be driving. A quick Google will get you the days of the week that towns have markets which from my understanding is a good time to visit. You can use Google maps to route from Bordeaux to Sarlat with a town in between. RD
We arrive in Bordeaux late afternoon on a Friday in July. We are picking up a car and plan to drive the more rural, scenic route to Sarlat where we will be staying for awhile. I will google the maps. Thank you for that suggestion. When are you traveling? If you run across any interesting information re: the drive, would appreciate it.
Try www.viamichelin.com too. They have options for what kind of drive you want. Scenic, fast, no tolls. They also note where the speed cameras are located
'what seems like a two hour drive' is more like three and a little bit, no matter how you cut it. You'll be pushing dark with a late afternoon arrival in Bordeaux, plus having to pick up a car and hiving out how to get across the river. Dark falls fast down in the valleys and a lot of the roads in the area have neither center-line nor side strips - - the absence of visual cues sucks. The most senic drive, at about five hours, is Bordeaux -> Saint Emilion -> Bergerac (crossing from the north to the south side of the Gironde at Porte Sainte Foy) -> Siorac en Perigord -> Les Eyzies -> Sarlat. You can chunk Saint Emilion if you're not a wine nut, but it's a neat little town.
