It appears that there are some choices as to which road to drive between Fussen and Salzburg. I should clarify that we may be driving from the Schongau area. Looking for the most scenic drive but OTOH am a bit apprenhensive about roads with switchbacks, dropoff edges, etc. Can anyone describe this drive? We were okay with various drives in Ireland but just wondering about driving in Austria. We will turn the car in before leaving Salzburg and take train to Vienna. Thanks!
Hi Susan,
We just took this same trip last year. We went via Innsbruck. The first 40+ miles descend the mountains; roads are not difficult at all, and very scenic---> well worth it. The rest of the way to Salzburg is autobahn, 100 mph + if you want.

Hi Susan,
I agree with the previous poster as going via Innsbruck. From Fuessen to Telfs, you'll cross the "Fern Pass" along route 179, not too crazy or bad at all. From Innsbruck (actually from Telfs) you could take the Autobahn the rest of the way. Depending on how you're doing on time, you could get off the Autobahn at Worgl, head in the direction of St. Johann (in Tirol) and go through the Berchtesgaden area to Salzburg. Beautiful scenery, but slower than the Autobahn of course.
