Does anyone have a recommendation on the best tour company for the castles near Munich? We are in our 50's an I'm wondering if the Bus Bavaria Tour is better for younger tourist. I have also looked at Pure Bavaria Tours and Radius Tours. I would apreciate your suggestions, thank you.
When I look at what these tour companies charge for what you can easily do yourselves, I need resuscitation. I've been to Füssen four times. It's not difficult to go to Füssen on you own. See my webpage.
loel, Some prefer to do that trip on their own. However, I used Radius Tours both for the visit to Neuschwanstein as well as Dachau. I thought the tours were good value, and the Guides were great (different Guide for each place). I also quite enjoyed the group that was on the tour that day. As I travel solo much of the time, it was a nice change. Happy travels!
I used Radius Tours for Dachau and Salzburg. The tour of Dachau was fantastic. The guide was very knowledgeable and I feel I got so much more out of the experience than if I had done it on my own. For Salzburg, the guide was not the usual Salzburg guide and I felt that did make a difference. He showed us things we might not have seen, but I don't think it was a good as it could have been. We went to the castles on our own as we traveled from the Black Forest to Munich. You CAN do it on your own, but if you want to take a tour I think Radius is a good company.
If you go on you own (S-Bahn and bus) to the Memorial, they will offer you a guided tour for €3. There is no reason to believe that the Memorial's own quides are not as qualified as those of the tour companies. (The tour companies probably hire quides who were trained by, and previously worked at, the Memorial). If you want to do the tour at your own speed, the Memorial rents audio guides for €3,50. If you are already staying in Munich, you probably need an Innenraum Tageskarte (€5,40 single, €9,80 partner, for 2-5 people) for sightseeing that day. Upgrading it (at time of purchase) to a Muenchen XXL Tageskartes (all day metro pass including Dachau) costs €1,90 more single, €3,- more partner. So, transportation out and back, and a quided tour, costs less than €5 pP net. Why would you pay anyone €21 for the same thing you can get for €5?
I loved Mike's Bike Tours for the castles. http://www.mikesbiketours.com/munich/
The guide was a kick in the pants, we did do a bike ride around the lake below the castle - it wasn't difficult and made it so much more fun. We also hiked around the back side of the castle - a great way to get there, no crowds, absolutely beautiful. We were all ages in our group of about 20 people. It was definitely a highlight for me.
