We'll be in Amsterdam for two and a half days - I know there's plenty to do/see in the city, but I'd really like to take a day trip out to the dutch countryside. I'm looking for recommendations for the best day trip out of Amsterdam - preferably one that involves a train ride of a couple of hours or less (I'd like to go over to Koeln, but it's a little too far). Any ideas?
For a first time trip to Amsterdam I would use those 2.5 days to explore the city. But my favorite side trip is Delft/The Hague preferably on weekend when Delft's street market is in full swing. This is fully described in Rick's guidebook.
If you can swing a full day-trip to another destination, consider a short bike trip out away from the city center. We did that one day and it was great.
Utrecht is a very underrated city as a tourist destination. Lovely small canals below street level, with the old store rooms turned into restaurants and bars.....great architecture....and a massive market at the Vredenburg (the entrance to the old city, hard by the railway station) on Wednesdays and Saturdays (Saturday's is the best). By train from Amsterdam Centraal, about half an hour.
