We are planning a trip for early May (first two weeks). We would love to explore the Bernese Oberland region (Wengen, Murren, etc.), but we are concerned everything will be shut down and not much to enjoy in terms of exploring or hiking. If anyone can provide any insight or suggestions for this time period, we would appreciate it. Thanks.
Matt, Most of the facilities in that region should be operating at that time of year, but may be on a reduced frequency. The Schilthornbahn should also be open, if you're planning to enjoy a fine hot meal in the revolving restaurant at 10,000 feet while watching the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau glide by the windows. The Lift will be closed for maintenance from 23 April to 27 April. Travellers can still reach Mürren via the mountain railway, but of course the Schilthorn won't be accessible until the Cable Car re-opens. Happy travels!
Some places will ba closed but not everything. It will definitely be quiet. Some of the lifts like Mannlichen will not be running. Not sure about the Schilthorn. The Jungfrau train will be running. The main concern is the mud and snow on the hiking trails.
We were there at the end of May and it was very quiet in Muerren. It was beginning to come alive but quiet nonetheless. The snow was all gone and the weather for us was beautiful. Going in early May could be different. Places may still be closed for "shoulder season" which is the transition from ski season to summer season. Always check with your hotel to see if they will be open.
