Bernese Oberland in mid May

I'm going to Switzerland the second week in May. I read that many of the hotels/restaurants in the alpine towns may be closed, but we'd like to spend at least one night in the region. Where would you recommend - Murren, Lauterbrunnen? I'd like to avoid Interlaken if possible.

My family and I are going to be in the Berner Oberland area around the 17th of May, and from the responses that I have received from hotels there, they expect to be open for business at that time. We've made a reservation to stay at one of the hotels in Murren.

They are both very nice places to stay. Lauterbrunnen is on the valley floor and Murren is half way up the mountain with a vew across the valley. Murren will probably be fairly quiet, and some of the hotels / restaurants will be closed. This might also be true in Lauterbrunnen, but to a lesser degree. I can recommend the Hotel Staubbach in Lauterbrunnen, and the Hotel Eiger (if it's open) in Murren.

Here's a link to general info in Murren which allows you to quickly look and see which hotels are open. http://www.muerren.ch/start-e.htm

If money is not an issue, I'd probably prefer Murren. The town might be a bit sleepy in mid-May, but not nearly as dead as mid-April. You can do some hiking, but most of the best high Alpine trails will still be difficult to access.
