Gimmelwald area - How do you find out exactly which day the cattle will be moved up to the alp in June 2008? Is it only determined locally and at the last minute? It would be nice to be in the area to watch.
Yes, determined locally, and not on a fixed date.

Depending on the weather and the growth of the mountain grasses, this seems to take place from late May to Mid-June. We were in Lauterbrunnen the first week in June last year. We stayed at the Hotel Silberhorn and we saw farmers walking 6-8 cattle past the front of the hotel each of the 3 mornings we were there. It's usually about 7:30am. When visiting Muerren during the day, we saw cattle being walked through up there as well. It's not just one day; it's several. You'll hear them some distance away by their distinctive and melodic Swiss cow bells.
