any suggestions on where to stay and what all to see? This will be my first trip there.
I agree with Kent. It's still ski season in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. If you stay in Lauterbrunnen, I recommend the Hotel Silberhorn (www.silberhorn.com). RS does like the Hotel Staubbach but I like the Hotel Silberhorn. You can possibly stay in Murren or Wengen but again, it's skiing time. If you can get any clear days, it should be stunning.
This is great timing. I am ready to make reservations with either Staubach or Silberhorn. What are the pros and cons for each?
My wife and I have stayed at the Hotel Silberhorn but not the Hotel Staubbach so I can only really comment on the Silberhorn. It's 500 feet from the train station and we stayed on the 3rd level of their newer annex which is behind the original hotel (about 6 years old). Our room was very clean and the view from the balcony was fabulous. The dining room was more like a restaurant. Breakfast was included and was the best we had in Europe. The dining room is also open for dinner. RS doesn't cover the hotel in his book but he does mention the dining room. Again, we found it to be excellent and would stay there again. On our visit, we me several people in the dining room who were on return visits to the hotel. Very convenient to the train station. If you are there at the very end of May or early June, the farmers walk the cows with their Swiss bells past the hotel in the morning.
I would definitely recommend that you contact Stechelberg Tourism Office and check to see if Nelli Beer has a vacancy then in one of her two apartments located in Stechelberg at the end of the Lauterbrunnen valley. It is very inexpensive and the location is wonderfully quiet and easy to reach by public bus or car. This of course is not a hotel, but the cost is very low and the setting could not be more perfect. Nelli and her husband Christian are wonderful people. It is also very close to the cable car station to go up to Gimmelwald, Muerren and Schilthorn. Three days is probably minimum time that Nelli will rent for.
We stayed at the Valley Hostel in Lauterbrunnen and was VERY pleased. The hostel is immaculate just as the Swiss people are.
There is a room (with a view) with a double bed on the upper level for 23 Euros per night per person.
Has a kitchen and nice dinning area on the same floor.
You can read all about those towns mentioned in these responses from travelers by searching on google for the town name plus "sights" or "attractions."
Many of them are alike, but all have special appeal because they are in the Alps. Be sure to take a cable car to the top of as many peaks as you have time for and can afford.
Pick a central location in the Oberland and make it your base. To to the Tourist Information Office at the RR station when you arrive and ask about a room.
The Swiss trains are fun and easy to ride and they run on schedule. I spent a week there in Andermat and traveled to a different part of the country every day.
