Does the Berner Oberland provide tours of the area. We are staying in Murren for 3 days and want to see the area, but don't know how to get around without a car. We want to see the waterfalls RS shows in his video. SOOOO.....how can we get around the Berner Oberland without a car, and does it provide 3 day tours. Thanks!!!
"how can we get around the Berner Oberland without a car". Easy. You walk. That's the whole reason for traveling there in the warmer months. Hiking in the summer, skiing in the winter. But to explain a little further, the only settled area of the Lauterbrunnen Valley (the Berner Oberland encompasses a much larger area, but both terms are used interchangably in Ricknik-land) where you can't drive, apart from some service roads, are the villages of Murren and Gimmelwald and the road that connects them. You can drive to most of the settlements in the valley and most of the villages on the Jungfrau-Eiger-Monch side. If you'll have a rental car, you would park it by the cable car station in the valley, then ride the gondola up to Murren ...or take the long hike up the side of the mountain. I remember seeing advertisements for guided moutaineering packages, but nothing like a "tour", although I wasn't looking for one.
Brendon It sounds like you have seen the video but haven't read the book. If you can get hold of a RS Switzerland Guidebook, edition 5 is most recent, at a library, borrow one from a friend, get one on Amazon, buy one from RS at the button above, somehow get hold of one, the Berner Oberland chapter has all your answers in spades. He outlines several walks, talks about transportation and parking options, restaurants - everything. Easy to get free maps of walks are easily available from all transportation hubs from Interlaken and all the way into the valley, on both sides. Seriously, get hold of the book. You won't need guides. Everything is on the yellow walking signs when you learn the code and follow the suggestions in the book. You're only about 40 miles from the free library at Rick Steves HQ in Edmunds. Fancy a day out?
