Berner Oberland in November?

I have 4 days mid-November for a side excursion out of Geneva. Am I foolish to even consider the Berner Oberland during this time period? It looks like the mountain towns have no places that are open. Has anyone done this trip in November, and if so, could you share your insights? Is it possible to do some moderate or light hiking that time of year in Gimmelwald, Murren, Lauterbrunnen etc.. without special winter gear?

We were in Zermatt (June), the hotel owner told us that last year they really didn't have credible snow until January. And according to Rick at least 2/3 of all Swiss ski lifts are money losers due to the very same reason, lack of the white stuff. So maybe November wouldn't be a bad bet if you're considering hiking and what not.

I've not been there in November, but I have traveled to the Interlaken area during the other shoulder season, April. Save the Alps for high skiing or hiking season. Most of the mountain towns virtually close their tourist infrastructure, leaving Interlaken as the only option. November might be better for hiking than the spring, however, because you won't have to deal with the snow run-off (think mud and lots of it!).

While friends told me they just had snow right after I got back from the BO alps in late August with beautiful weather... you never know what might happen with the weather. Go ahead and plan it but keep close whatch of the weather when you get to Geneva... and #2... have a backup plan! (local castles like Chillon and Greyer, or check out Chamonix 1 hour away from Geneva if THEIR weather is better than BO! But have fun either way!
