We're going to be in the Berner Oberland over Christmas. Where's the best part to stay for the Christmas festivities? How extensive are the closures on 12/25-26? If we stay at Esther's, how accessible is Murren in the winter? Thanks!
Skiing is the economic lifeblood of Murren, and the Christmas holiday is usually the busiest time of the year for any Alpine resort. It should be as accessible as any other time in the winter. I've never stayed in the Berner Oberland over Christmaas, but I have in other Alpine regions. In my experience, restaurants not affiliated with a hotel usually close early on the 25th, but they often offer a special holiday meal in the early afternoon. Hotel restaurants will also usually prepare a special meal, but they may or may not serve it early. I'm not familiar with "Esther's", so I can't comment.
Gimmelwald is a ghost town in the winter, if you want to be involved in some festivities definitely stay in Murren. Keep in mind that Dec 25-26 is absolute peak season in Murren, so you would want to book soon. Also many of the places may have a minimum stay of one week during that time, so keep that in mind also. Have fun, its an amazing place!
