Will be on a RS tour in the Berner Oberland area for 3 days in July. Which Pass would be best for hiking/cable cars/trains for both Schilthorn and Jungfraujoch areas? Or should be simply purchase individual tickets when we arrive there? Thanks!
I suggest that a Swiss pass or card would be best given the itinerary you list above. The journeys to the Jungfraujoch and the Schilthorn are expensive (approx. $190 R/T and $90 R/T respectively). No Swiss pass or card will give provide you with more than a 50% discount on these fares. However, you will do much better with one. I can speak about the Swiss 1/2 Card. The Swiss 1/2 fare card. It costs 110CHF (Swiss Francs) and it's good for 30 days. You get half fare on all Swiss transportation including going to the top of the two mountains. I realize that you only need it for 3-4 days but it may pay for itself. The pass will also work as you enter and depart Switzerland. You start breaking even around $240 in ordinary point-to-point fares. Please note that Eurail passes or non-Swiss passes only get you a 25% discount for the places you list in the Berner Oberland.
Jean, I'm also analyzing transportation options for the Berner Oberland, as I'll be in that area for about five days later this year. I plan on taking a number of trips while there, including the Jungfraujoch. I'm still "number crunching" and designing an Excel sheet, but at this point it still looks cheaper to buy P-P tickets. The 50% discount on the lifts is nice, but the cost of the Pass exceeds the discounts. You might send a note to the RS tour department, to see if they have any tips or suggestions. Good luck and happy travels!
Jean, If you are taking one of the GAS tours then you will really only have either 2 full days or 1 1/2 days on your own. There is a special offer this summer - the Centenary Pass http://www.jungfrau.ch/en/sommer/tourism/places-to-visit/jungfraujoch-top-of-europe/offers/#jungfrau-centenary-pass_245 It's a 3 day pass that includes a trip to the top of the Jungfrau for 225 CHF. I don't know if it would cover any travel on the other side above Murren. All of the regional passes can be bought there (in the Berner Oberland). I imagine your tour guide will be very helpful in deciding which pass would be best, but for the limited time my guess would be point to point tickets would probably make the most sense.
Thanks so much everyone! Really appreciate your suggestions. And you're right Jill.....looks like we will actually only have 1 1/2 to 2 days at the most to hike around the Murren area, so most likely will just do point to point. My daughter (who is a young attorney in Austin!) and I hiked there five years ago, but we utilized our Select Passes and I guess some point to point tickets. So very excited to be able to visit this awesome area again, this time with my husband! Again, thanks!
