Do you have a copy of RS "Germany, Austria, & Switzerland" guide book? Many good suggestions in there.

It's been a few years, but we've used Bern twice as a great BASE for exploring Switz. The town itself is pretty to walk around and look at unusual statues, fountains, and clock towers, but the train service is WONDERFUL. From Bern, we've been all over Switzerland, including small places like Gruyere and Solothurn (both of which are neat, "off-the-beaten-path" towns).

If you do go, try to see Lucerne - it's fabulous, but very expensive to stay. Geneva & Zurich are, in my opinion, nice, but overrated - and VERY expensive. Try the train, you'll see small Swiss villages, complete with cows, cowbells, and quaint house/barns. And, scenery right out of "Sound of Music" - but up close, and real.

By the way, don't assume you're at the wrong train platform just because you're the only ones there 10 or 15 minutes before departure time. The Swiss trains run on schedule (except close to Italy) to the minute, or more often, to the second - and the Swiss know it, and use it.

I had to drag my wife to Switzerland the 1st time. Now, I can't afford to take her there nearly as often as she would like.

Lastly, be sure to allow time to window-shop and visit one of the many fancy chocolate shops in town. You'll probably eat it up in minutes, but you'll talk about the fabulous creations for years!

We really loved Bern. Just walking around and discovering all the different fountains and statues can be fun. And if you have any interest at all in Albert Einstein Bern is THE place to be. His old appartment smack in the middle of the historic centre is quite interesting. And the "Historisches Museum Bern" now has a permanent Einstein exhibit. And of course lots more stuff to discover not only about the history of Bern but of Switzerland as a whole.

Oh my goodness I dream of Berne. I love the town and have only been there once and it was a Sunday.
Everything was closed. We did walk through the arcades and all over the town past the river where
swimmers were floating in inner tubes. It is very beautiful and of all the towns in Switzerland, it is my favorite. So by all means don't skip this town.
It is easily accessible by train.

Happy Travels!
