We're flying out of Zurich and have one extra day in the Bernese Oberland area. Should we choose Bern or Luzern for that extra day?

Hi David,
I've been to Bern once, but have lost count of the number of times we opted for Luzern. The two Luzern hotels I can recommend are (1) Chateau/Hotel Gütsch and (2)Hotel Waage (aka Hotel Balances).
If you have Eurail passes, it probably affords you free passage on the lake steamers - a free Swiss cruise is hard to beat.
If you like incredible views, take a steamer to Vitznau and then take the Vitznau-Rigi Bahn to the top of Mount Rigi ... a clear day is needed, of course. Keep on traveling ! Gute Reise... P

For one day: Ditto Luzern Area. And i mean the nearby areas not the city ! Perry mentioned in another post that the lake boat ends in Fluelen. I have stayed in hotels in both Fluelen and Alpnachstad (the start of cog-railway to Pilatus). Both towns are wayyyyy less expensive than the central Luzern hotels !!! Plus they are about 20 minutes away from Luzern for your Zurich connection
