Bern hotels near train station or US Embassy

I have to make a stop at the US Embassy next week in Bern and am looking for a hotel close to either the train station or the Embassy. I am looking to keep things as simple as possible---able to walk from the train station to the hotel, not having to get on a tram/bus or take a taxi if possible.

Thank you in advance for any recommendations!

Please post what you do find, Sharon, because I have been looking for good hotels at a reasonable price near Bern station for several years - unsuccessfully. I now often stay at the end of a tram line when is Bern.

sharon,

You might also have a look at Hotel Continental which is reasonably close to the rail station. I've walked from the hotel to the station with about 50 lbs. of gear on my back, and didn't find it overly strenuous. With a wheelie bag, I'm sure it would be much easier.

I found the room to be very comfortable, they serve a decent breakfast and there are some good restaurants nearby. As I recall there's a Starbucks on the corner, not too far from the hotel.

Happy travels!

Nigel: I didn't have luck staying near the train station, a combo of too many people in a room (2 adults, 2 small kids) and last minute booking. Ended up having to take the tram to the Bern Novotel but all worked out. However, like the others posted, hotels close that I would look into again next time--National, City, Continental and of course the Hotel Schweizerhof (super pricey though). The National would be my top pick, although they received mixed reviews, the location is ideal, off to the side and right by the tram line if needed. We ended up walking from the US Embassy back to the Novotel which was not bad and a great way to see the town. My two kids (ages 3 and 8) were fine with the walk and stops along the way to play.

Thank you all for the help!
