We plan to spend about 4 days in the Bern-Fribourg-Murten-Neuchatel area before meeting friends in Interlaken. We're interested in seeing medieval towns and possibly doing some day hikes or day bicycle rides. We would like to hear about your favorite spots in that area and any recommendations on day bike rides/tours or day hikes. Also any recommendations on where to rent bikes and good inexpensive accomodations in the area. Thanks!

I can't speak to cycling in that region but Murten, Gruyeres and Bern itself are nice. The first two have gorgeous old sections. Honestly, Switzerland is so small that everything is close. For instance, the Jura is not very far from where you'll be. Just driving up through the the area will be incredibly rewarding in terms of small towns (every town is small and charming). If you see something nice, just stop. Remember Switzerland's beauty lies in its countryside not in its cities.
