Will be taking my 25 year old daughter to Berlin for her first visit in April. I have been many times and can serve as tour guide for all the traditional sites and events (we have tickets to the Philharmonie).
But would welcome advice as to how to give her a sense of the cultural live for folks her age. Can somebody recommend a bar or club or restaurant, maybe with music, or maybe a neighborhood that we could drop by and have drink so she can get a sense of the cultural flavor of the city for her age group. She lives in Florence, Italy, so is familiar with the scene there. Many thanks.
Hi, The "scene" area for your daughter's age group in Berlin is primarily the district of Prenzlauer Berg and some of Friedrichshain. Also try Mitte. Since you're familiar with Berlin, show her also Kreuzberg, maybe in comparison with Prenzlauer Berg.
So many places to go! Prenzlauer berg is the traditional neighborhood for young nightlife, but these days it's a little more yuppified. Still fun. Friedrichschain and Kreuzberg have pretty dense pockets of hip young bars and eateries, both would be good for a nighttime stroll. And despite the fact that you'll be surrounded by boisterous drunks, I still found everyone to be well-mannered and never felt threatened or in danger, even when walking through an old industrial factory in Friedrichshain that now hosts some clubs. Speaking of dance clubs, that's a huge thing in Berlin too, but my understanding is they don't even really get going until after midnight or so, which might not work on your travel schedule. I would recommending checking out the New York Times' travel section to Berlin online, they write about Berlin fairly frequently with a fairly youthful focus.
