Any tips for restaurants not to miss for our upcoming trip to Berlin over Christmas-New Year's holiday?
Don't have specifics as I've not been to Berlin but have a travel tip. Type in "Berlin Food Blogs" into Google. I do this for every city I'm traveling to. I've never been disappointed in restaurants that were recommended in such diverse cities as Dublin, NYC, Dallas, Paris, Seattle, Rome, etc. Have a wonderful trip.
Pam: I do not know your tastes or where you are staying in Berlin. We were recently in Berlin. We found a very good and reasonably priced place in Charlottenburg. Try the Thomas Eck at Pestalozzistr. 25, 10627 Berlin. It is close to the Wilmersdorfer U-Bahn station. They serve a buffet on Wednesday evenings that is great.
Pam- One of the best restaurants in Berlin, loved by locals and tourists alike, is Hasir, with multiple locations, but the closest one to the sites is in Hackescher Markt. It's fabulous. They have a great website so you can check out the menu. I also recommend the Mr. Vong's minichain for an inexpensive, yummy meal.
The Italian restaurants in Prenzlauer Berg are also a treat. Moderately priced and surprisingly good pizza and pasta. I was told by an Italian living in Italy that Berlin has the best pizza in Europe outside of Italy. It doesn't disappoint. Just don't get "pizza mit ei (with egg)." I consider myself an adventurous eater and I thought I was going to gag.
Berlin has the best food in Germany! As an expat though, I avoid German food in Berlin since I can get that ANYWHERE. If you want a fancy meal, I had a great birthday dinner at Hartmann's in Kreuzberg. It's Michelin-starred, the service is fabulous, and the food was divine. It's also a good value compared to other similar restaurants, although still rather pricey. There are two good Mexican "chains" in Berlin - Dolores* burrito (original location near Alexanderplatz) and the "Maria" chains - Maria Bonita, Santa Maria, and Maria Peligro. Have ate at the first one once, and the latter one twice, and both delicious by my rather high standards for Mexican. HOWEVER I think Maria Bonita is closed through New Years so call before you go. Aroma in Charlottenberg has delicious, fresh-made dim sum and is a steal. Sasaya in Prenzlauerberg is good but pricey for sushi, but had reasonably priced udon and ramen that sounded delicious. The Bird, also in P-berg, was heaven for me as an expat craving good burgers and steaks, but probably not a huge priority for you on a brief trip. However their napalm wings are literally the spiciest thing I've ever eaten. AVOID White Trash Fast Food. Not nearly as fun as it sounds, but way overpriced. I'm only speaking to restaurants I actually tried personally, after lots of research, focusing on foods I couldn't get in Stuttgart, but I hope this helps.
Whoops, just saw you're in L.A., you'll probably still find even good Berlin Mexican food expensive and not fantastic compared to what you can get anywhere at home. But still, throwing it out there in case you do get sick of German food. The Christmas Markets have lots of delicious German food, too! As well as Tyrolean food, Italian food, etc.
Hi, Berlin has a tremendous variety of cuisines, even in some of the individual districts. I am most familiar with the restaurants in the Savignyplatz in Charlottenburg where you can get traditional German such as at "Dicke Wirtin." Across the street on Knesebeckstraße is a popular large Mexican restaurant, always packed in the summer. A couple of French, also Italian, Chinese, Austrian. Greek restaurants are all within walking distances from each other from the S-Bahn station Savignyplatz. If you're staying in Mitte, near Berlin Hbf, catch S-Bahn 3 or 75 to Savignyplatz. Either exit, Bleibtreustrasse or Savignyplatz, will lead to numerous restaurants. As suggested above, you'll find a ton of choices in Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg.
