I will be in Berlin for 10 days in August. Where can I travel quickly, easily for 2-3 day stays - perhaps into Italy - to maximize my visit. Train travel to see the vistas seems first choice but not if it takes overnight. Never have been, want to absorb as much as possible without getting stressed. I'm early 50's personal trainer with no physical or health limitations except my budget. Many thanks.
Hi Donna, to go from Berlin to Italy is at least one to one and a half-days of travel unless you fly. To maximize your visit and use the train I would suggest the Prague in the Czech Republic. There are hourly trains from Berlin to Prague. It's a beautiful city and not to be missed. Dresden Germany is between Prague and Berlin and very nice too. Good luck.
Donna, I second Dresden, the capital of Saxony, with its rebuilt treasures and the Elbe river, with boat tours and the Sandsteingebirge nearby. Any long train trip I've taken in Germany has not been very scenic, by the way, no dramatic vistas, just flat country and endless fields. By the way, if you check the Dresden website and request their tourist information they may send it to you free of charge and via air mail. Anyway, they did this two years ago when I asked for it. It arrived within ten days. All the brochures were printed in several languages, including, of course, English.
I also recommend Dresden with side trips to Bautzen and Gorlitz which on the Polish border. These are in the RS guide book. Or side trip to Meissen and Leipzig depending on your interest. 2-3 days would be plenty of time to cover these. Be sure and day trip out to Potsdam while in Berlin. All of these are esy to reach on the trains. Dresden has excellent tram service to see the local sights.
