berlin hallstatt zurich

Hey folks!
I plan a 9 day trip second week of august as follows:

arrive in berlin for 4-5 nights. take a flight frmo berlin to salzburg (not staying in salzburg though) then head to hallstatt for 2 nights. After hallstatt, we plan to drive by car to Zurich or luzern (for 2 nights).

My questions:
is this route practicale?
how far is hallstatt to zurich and is it a comfortable/safe route to drive?

btw - we may also do the journy the way round: i.e. start in zurich, then to hallstatt, then salzburg to take the plane to berlin for 4-5 nights.

Would appreciate a lot any advice or tips!

thanks!

AA: Petrol prices doesn't give Switzerland. I found a website that gave the price in US$/gal as $5.57/gal. That works out to about €1,13/liter at today's exchange rate, vs €1,40 for Germany and €1,08 for Austria.

Reliable? As far as mapping the trip I think ViaMichelin is reliable. As far as time, I think they are a little optimistic. Their time as travel times, not including stops for fuel, food, toilets, and they are assuming no traffic jams, which are common in Germany, or wrong turns.

One thing that you should know is that you can get a Europa-Spezial fare from Freilassing (just across the river from Salzburg) to Zurich or Luzern for as low as €39 pP online from German Rail. The fare from Salzburg Hbf to Freilassing is €2,10 pP.
