Berlin/ Christmas markets, what not to miss on a two day visit

Any advice on Christmas markets in Berlin, where are the good ones to check out?
Also, we will be in town for 2.5 days, what things should we not miss? Traveling with a 5 year old so we have to factor that in to our city tours. Looking for neat shopping, great family friendly restaurant options. Thanks!

Berlin has a lot of great Christmas markets, and many of them are very different in Character. One of the biggest ones is in front of the St. Nikolai church, just south of Alexanderplatz. It's a very "typical" large market. One of my favorite markets I dubbed the "hipster" market, in Prenzlauerberg, at the "Kulturbrauerei" near the Eberswalder strasse Ubahn stop. Absinthe in your mulled wine, hip records and CDs for sale by local artists, funky knit caps, unique Finnish food items, a lot of fun! The most beautiful market I've been to is the upscale one at the Gendarmenmarkt, not too far from Checkpoint Charlie. It cost a euro to get in, but the setting and decorations were very classy and lovely, with some exceptionally nice shopping opportunities and even "fine dining" - more than just wurst stands. The market at Bebelplatz right in the Mitte had a Santa who rode down tracks in the sky on his sleigh and that seemed to be a hit with the kids. With over 50 markets all over the city, I'm sure you'll discover many more on your own!

You should try the Kurfurstendamm, K dam for a short Unter den Linden is well worth a walk with the little one, a great Christmas market already mentioned, some of the best buildings and the Brandenburg Gate at the end. The TV tower is also an unforgettable experience for the little ones

Try taking one of the boat tours that starts on the river bank near Friedrichstrasse station. Compared to many other cities, Berlin has relatively little public access to river banks in the centre, so you really will get some views that you won't any other way.
