My wife and I are staying three 3 days in the Berchtesgaden area December 26-29. Does anyone have ideas for fun outdoor activities such as downhill or cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing, hiking, etc.? Also, any restaurant and side-trip ideas would be great!

There is downhill skiing off the Jenner (1800m) and a lift, the Jennerbahn, to get you up there. There would probably be cross country skiing at the top, as well as anywhere around Berchtesgaden if the snow is that low.
As far as getting to Salzburg, RVO (Regionalverkehr Oberbayern) runs buses all over the Berchtesgaden area as well as an hourly express (Watzmann Express) from the Berchtesgaden Hbf into the Hbf in Salzburg. An all day pass, good for a round trip into Salzburg, is €8,50.
We spent a few days in the Berchtesgaden area this past February. Salzburg, Austria is about a 30 minute drive away and is a beautiful city to visit. If you're without a car, I think there is public transportation available.
