Berchtesgaden vs. Hof bei Salzburg??

I am planning a two week trip to Germany / Austria. I have determined I want to stay four nights in the Alps. I was planning on staying somewhere in / near Berchtesgaden but then found a hotel ArabellSheraton Hotel Jagdoh in Austria (near Salzburg) that says it is only 16 miles from Berchtesgaden. The benefit / attraction is I can use Starpoints to stay at the hotel for free vs. the cost of paying for a room near B. Does anyone know if the driving (I will have a rental car) is easy enough to do Eagle's nest, Salt Mines, Salzburg, etc.? Does anyone know anything about the location of this small town - it looks nice and is situated on a Lake - any help / advice would be great. I don't mind paying for a room near B. but if there is not much difference why spend the extra money. Thanks for your help in advance!

Ron:
We're staying in Berchtesgaden this May. We chose it for all the reasons you mention for day tripping.
Everything is sooo close. Because your lodging is secured it makes sense to use it.

Driving time to B is brief as it is 12 miles from salzburg. Train time is 15 minnutes.

From parking lot at Documentation Center you can get the mandatory bus ride to Eagles Nest, no driving allowed to the Nest. RT bus is 3 Euros cheaper from this parking lot than B station.

If you want a driving break on other day trips, you can park at B town station and use the local buses to get to Lake Konigsee, and Bus#9540 to Salt Mine or a 20 minute walk.

Ron,
I have stayed at the Jagdhof several times and it is a really nice hotel in a great location with an excellent restaurant. It's on a hill overlooking the Fuschlsee (Lake Fuschl) - be sure to ask for a room with a view of the lake. The hotel has an annex where the swimming pool is located & the rooms are just as good as in the main building. You're about 20" to Salzburg & 40" to Berchtesgaden. In the other direction, you're very close to the Wolfgangsee & the pretty villages of St. Gilgen & St. Wolfgang. You can also do a day trip to Bad Ischl & Hallstadt. The mountains around the hotel aren't very high, but you'll get to see the snowcapped Alps when you go to Berchtesgaden. Salzburg, of course, is a great place to spend a day & there's a very nice Sheraton Hotel there, also.

Below is a link to a tour of the Eagle's Nest. David and Christine Harper are the tour guides and they do a fantastic job. Christine did our tour in 2002 and it was one of the best tours I have taken. They start in Berchtesgaden across from the train station and you board a mini bus to a point and then transfer to a larger bus for the final drive to the top. It is most informative and you have an insight that others do not have who just take the big bus all the way. Here is the link.
