Hello! My husband and I are looking for a hotel or B and B to stay in in Berchtesgaden at the end of June. Can anyone recommend a great place? We'll be traveling via trains and busses so it should be within walking distance of town, and I would prefer to spend $120 or less per night (but we have some wiggle room for a great place!)...
Thanks!
Unfortunately, the place where I stayed for three nights in 2002 is no longer there, but I have had good reports on Hotel Bavaria. It's close to the station and town. For any but the most basic rooms, you'll have to use a little wiggle room, but a room does include breakfast buffet.
There is also a nice looking place on Königssee, called Schiffmeister, right at the boat docks. I think it is reasonably priced, and it would be a nice place to stay, but you have to take a bus from the Hbf to the bus parking place above Schönau, and then walk about 100 yds down the pedestrian street to the lake.
In 2002, we stayed in a Gasthaus about 100 yds up Ramsauer Str. from the Hbf. He is no longer in the business, and I don't see anyone else listed at that address, but the place next door, Gästehaus Achental, is listed. They are close, and the price is closer to what you want.
We stayed at Hotel Grunberger on June 24, 2002. It was across from the train station and the tourist information office. It was a decent uphill walk to the town center but I cannot recall exactly how far. We walked in without reservations and the rooms were nice with our terrace overlooking the river flowing through town. The rate was 40 euros per person so our total was 80 euros and at the time that was $78.84. It was a few days later that the Euro rose back above $1.00. I have no idea what the room rate today would be but you could research it and find out.
Hotel Grünberger is at www.hotel-gruenberger.de.
The walk from the Hbf to the town center is not bad. There is a bridge over the railroad tracks with the steps in the building to the left (facing) of the Bahnhof, then a path up the hill to town.
Thanks Lee. Does not look like the rates have gone up too much in the past 8 years.
