Berchtesgaden

We will be heading to Berchtesgaden from Salzburg. I have 2 questions. First: We will be visiting the Dokumentation Centre. Is there anything significant in the Eagle's Nest? Is it an interesting trip and worth it? Second: Can we access the luge track easily when we are there? Will we have time for Konigssee in the same day?

We did both the Eagle's Nest and the Konigssee the same day easily (we drove three hours to get there, too). We did not do the luge and we arrived too late to do the Dokumentation Centre or the tunnels underneath. If we had arrived at the Konigssee before 11AM we could have done it all (except the luge). The Eagles Nest as a building is not very interesting at all. But the trip by bus up to the tunnel and gold elevator was amazing and the VIEW from the top, just above the nest, was magical. I have been on taller mountains, but I have NEVER seen such an amazing mountain view. To me, it even beats Gimmelwald in Switzerland. I consider that view to be one the the top 3-4 highlights of our 5-week trip this summer. www.lee-reid2010.blogspot.com

I thought the Eagles' Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) was worth seeing, not only for the spectacular view. I've seen old black and white movies of Hitler and Eva Braun at Kehlsteinhaus, and it was kind of eerie to think that I was in exactly the same place. No, you can't do Kehlsteinhaus, the Dok Center, and Königsee in the same day, at least not if you really see them. We did Königsee in half a day. We had lunch at Wimbach Brücke, after hiking in the gorge, came back to the Hbf and took the bus to Königsee We didn't spend a lot of time at St. Bartholomew, but went all the way up to the end of the lake at Salat and hiked over the bar to Obersee before returning. However, we spent a whole day at Kehlsteinhaus and the Dok Center. We left the Berchtesgaden Busbahnhof at about 9, went up Kehlstein, hiked a little bit, had lunch, then came down and spent the rest of the day at the Dok Center and in the bunkers.
