Berchtesgaden Bus Fares

Trying to find info on bus fares in Berchtesgaden, but the website www.rvo-bus.de in only in German. Anyone know what the fares are?

I know, it's frustrating. I can read German, but that doesn't help. They have a table of fares, in km, but the individual bus schedules don't show the km, so that doesn't help. I can tell you that the fare, for instance, from Berchtesgaden to Kehlstein B/A is only a few Euro.

At most, if you buy an RVO Tagesticket, for €9,- pP, you get unlimited rides on all the RVO buses for the day (excluding the spezial mountain buses from Kehlstein B/A to the Eagles' Nest), and, if you come into Berchtesgaden using a Bayern-Ticket, it includes unlimited use of all the regional trains and all of the buses of the RVO. The Watzmann express, the bus from Salzburg Hbf to Berchtesgaden, is not included with a Bayern-Ticket, but is included with the RVO Tagesticket.

In the past I've sent them emails (in German, at [email protected]) about fares, and they have always answered. They might answer in English, as well.

If you can't get an answer in English, PM me and I'll ask in German.

Thanks, Lee. We will be arriving on an overnight train, so unable to benefit from the Bayern ticket offer. We plan to drop off our bags at our hotel and go straight to the Dokumentation Obersalzberg and then to the Kehlsteinhaus. Do you know if there is an entrance fee for the Kehlsteinhaus, separate from the bus fee? I found the site below, which shows the bus fare as 3 Euros one way to the Dokumentation Center, so the tagesticket sounds like the way to go...but it only shows a fee of 15 Euros for the bus from there up to the Kehlsteinhaus. I remember seeing something where it was a lot more expensive. http://www.berchtesgadener-land.info/index.cfm?uuid=8F6AF8C9ACF14F05AA7A0DAD377ED2D7&and_uuid=9B932D269CAE411D8CDD9AD0A7370AC9&o_lang_id=2

Cindy, if you use Google's Chrome browser, it will ask you if you want the page translated. Once you respond, it will then translate the page (and subsequent pages) for you. It's a very handy feature to use when planning travel. :)

I looked up my records from 2002, and we paid €3,70 RT pP to the "Dokumentation/Kehlstein BA" bus stop then, so around €3 one way sounds about right for now. According to the RVO fare table, the current one way adult fare for 11-12 km is €2,95. For 13-15 km it's €3,70. Assuming it's €2,95 one way, if you say "Hin- und Rückfahrt" (pr. Hin unt Rick-fart), it should be only be €5,35 RT. If you are only going to use the local buses to and from the Dok Center, that's your best price, but if you have a hotel up in town, you might want to take buses with your luggage, then the flexibility of the Tagesticket might be desirable.

There is actually no admission fee to Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle's Nest). If you are on the mountain, you can walk right in. I've seen people hiking up the mountain to get in free, but you can't drive on the private bus road. The charge is for "Bus und Aufzug, hin und zurück, Erwachsene € 15,50 p. P.", round trip on the bus to the bus parking lot below the Haus and on the elevator from the parking lot to the top, adults, €15,50 per person.

Admission to the Dok Center was €2,50 pP when I was there in 2002. According to the website it's €3,- now.

The English language side of the Kehlsteinhaus website lists some 3rd party package tours for more.

I see the website you referenced. Those are obviously last year's prices, €15,- for adults, but has the bus price gone from €3 one way to €3,70 (?); that might make the Tagesticket even more attractive.

Thank you, Lee...I must have been looking at a tour price cuz I budgeted over 100 Euros for the 3 of us. I'm excited that I get to save money!

We are staying at Hotel Bavaria, they claim to be 300 meters from the train station, so we shouldn't need the bus for that. However, I may get the tagesticket anyway just to keep our options open.

Hotel Bavaria is, indeed, near, and a more-or-less level walk from, the Bahnhof. On my first trip to the area, in 2000, I stayed in Freilassing, so I could easily get to either Salzburg or Berchtesgaden, and rode the train. While I was at the Bahnhof I photographed likely looking accommodations right around the Bahnhof for future reference, and Hotel Bavaria was one of them. If you want to check in and lose your bags, it's really close.

If you want to go into town from there, there is a pedestrian bridge over the tracks with stairs from a building to the left of the Bahnhof, then a trail along the hill into town. There is also a road, called I think Bahnhofstrasse, just beyond Hotel Bavaria, and, of course, there are buses.

Berchtesgaden is one of my three or four favorite places in Germany. Enjoy.
