I am trying to determine how many days it would take to visit Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany at a moderate pace.
We did a self tour in all three countries.
I would stay a minimum of 2 full days in Brugge.
The Netherlands and Germany as much time as you have.
We stayed in Trier took a day trip to Luxembourg City and took a city tour of the City. Then took a bus to the American Cemetary where General Patton is buried.
I have not visited the nortern part of Germany, but the souther Barvarian area is beautiful. The German people are very nice...and so are the Dutch.
There is so much to see and experience in the Netherlands and Germany. I would love to spend a month in each country.
I think you need to narrow down what specific areas you want to visit. Yes, Luxembourg isn't very big, but Germany is huge, and even smaller Belgium and the Netherlands have a great deal of variety.
I was thinking about a two week trip that includes the following:
In the Netherlands
Amsterdam 2 days
Haarlem Day 3
Historic Triangle (Hoorn, Medemblik, and Enkhuizen) or one of the following Edam, Delft, or The Hague for Day 4
In Belgium:
Bruges Day 5 & 6
Brussels Day 7 or a passing through visit
Luxembourg Day 8 (not sure if I need more time here)
As far as the additional week, I'm not sure what to do with. I'm not sure if I should visit some must see areas in Germany, Denmark, or Switzerland.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Given the amount of time you have allocated, I think your plan for Belgium and the Netherlands is sensible. You can probably see Luxembourg City in one day, you may even be able to see it as a stop-over on your way to Germany, depending on your destination there. On what areas of Germany did you want to concentrate?
Should I spend two weeks in Belgium and the Netherlands, or should I try to spread it out and see a little bit of Germany. My understanding is that it takes at least two weeks to skim Germany. My life dream is to spend time in every country that I can possible visit in my life time. In my opinion, I think Germany would be a completely separate trip. However, I’m not entirely sure. I’ve never been there. Would I get bored with two weeks in Belgium and the Netherlands?
You can't really see all of Germany even with two weeks. Better some than none.
I'd suggest a few days in Bruges and Brussels, a stop in Luxembourg on the way to Germany's Mosel Valley (just over the border, really, from L'bourg, and one of the most interesting and scenic areas of Germany) for a few days, and a few days more in Amsterdam and whatever else you might have in mind for the Netherlands (Delft is pleasant.) Distances are short and there'd be enough time for that.
Then you'll check out the rest of Germany on 2 or 3 return trips. It's a big and interesting place.
Just returned from 10 days in The Netherlands. We lived in Haarlem for a year but wanted to go to Maastricht and Luxembourg. First, stay in Haarlem. It's wonderful. Definitely eat at Restaurant Subliem at 44 on Kleine Houtstraat. It's worth the trip from Houston! I'm not sure why Rick doesn't feature it... Took the train to Maastricht, which is easy, and made a day trip to see the Cathedral in Aachen, Germany. Wonderful. Our trip to Luxembourg to the cemetary and Battle of the Bulge museum was derailed by the ladies at the VVV who told us it was not a day trip, even though it's so close. However, we did visit the American cemetary at Margraden, which was wonderful. Definitely do Delft and Hoorn. You'll have a wonderful time. Bruges is a lovely place and you should stay two days. We stayed at Hotel Adornes every time we went and enjoyed it.
Two weeks is more than enough for the Belgium and Netherlands. I would probably spend one week in the two, then plan a week in Germany.
For the week in Germany you will have to pick an area. My top two choices would be:
A week covering the Rhine and Mosel. On the Mosel visit Trier, Burg Eltz, Cochem then up to Bonn and Koln. On the Rhine Bacharach, St. Goar and maybe finish in Wurtzburg.
Second option, a week in Bavaria. Include Munich, Salzburg, Neuschwanstein and the Romantic Road up to Rhotenburg and Wurtzburg.
