I will be in France and Germany later this summer and have some interest in going to Belgium for a few days. Everything I have looked at shows a pretty place but very few or no tourist at all. Is Belgium worth the trip, and if so, would appreciate a list of areas to see.
If you've never visited, Brugge is the obvious stop for a first trip to Belgium. Think of it as "Venice of the North" with better beer and fries. I personally also have enjoyed Leuven, Antwerpen and Hasselt, although I admit, if your tourist time and money are limited, these probably aren't first-tier destinations.
Belgium is absolutely worth the trip. If you base in Bruges for a few days you can take a short train ride to other places no problem (Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent) - or rent a car to get out to the countryside. You could pretty much cover the highlights of Bruges in 2 full days and use the rest of your time for day trips to other parts.
No tourists at all? Bruges in season has plenty of tourists from all over the world...but if you get off the main square and out into the neighborhoods, you can easily get away for some peace and quiet.
I agree that Brugge (Bruges) is a must see if you are in Belgium. A day trip to Brussels - to see the Grande Place is easy. Bruges has some great little museums as well as just being a quaint small city. We're going back in June for several days - doing more biking this time.
I liked Brussels. A day should be enough.
