Is this worth visiting? We will be staying in Bruges and traveling by train. Can we get there and how far? I read about a full day tour, but we really do not have that much time to spend a full day.

Quite close. I believe the easiest way to visit is by arranged tours which leave from Bruges. The RS book goes into a bit of detail. I imagine that public transport would be available to Ypres (Ieper) but I haven't checked. The best memorials and trenches are out of town, easily available by car, less easy on foot.
