I have a week to spend in or around Lyon. I am willing to take a train, no car. I have already done Paris.
How nice to have so much time in Lyon and the surrounding Rhone Valley and the Auvergne. You'll be able to see it in more depth than Rick gives it in his short chapter in France 2008. For in depth coverage, you may want to buy the "Auvergne & Rhone Valley" book of the Michelin Green Guide series. Send me a Private Msg if you want restaurant and hotel suggestions.
The best meal I've had in Lyon was at La Machonnerie in Vieux Lyon (old town). I still remember the waitress almost trembling as she warned me to let my wine breathe a long time before drinking it because I picked such a young wine (it was 4 years old). I thought it was delicious right out of the bottle. I always go by the theory that if it wasn't good to drink, they wouldn't put it on the wine list!
We loved the Gallo-Roman Museum and amphitheaters on Fourviere Hill, and we loved Vieux Lyon. Otherwise, frankly, we didn't find that much to do or see in Lyon.
