Going to Germany for the fifth time. I usually rent a car and drive. This time we are going into northern Italy and I thought a train may be best. On The DB website it appears to me that 2 tickets from Frankfurt to Milan will be 150 euros a piece. Did I search that correctly. If possible, I would like to take the train from Frankfurt to Milan to Florence to Venice and back to Frankfurt. We would be stopping a night or 2 in most places. Any suggestions on how to use the DB site and/or the Italian site would be greatly appreciated. We are leaving in 5-6 weeks. Is there a benefit to buying tickets weeks in advance or can I wait until 1 week before.
Thank you
Noooooo!
Unless you buy them, last minute, at the station. Then, yes - 150 euros, +/-.
Otherwise, using a date 5-6 weeks out, you can buy (NOW) tickets for 1/2 that price.
AND, you can do better than that, but Lee is the guy you want to answer you...Pay attention!!! You won't do any better than what he suggests!
I just wanted you to know that the cavalry IS coming...;-)
BUMP
(have a mini-crisis to handle right now; plan to check back later...)
Thanks for the into, Mary.
John, with purchase well in advance (max 92 days, recommend ASAP after that), you can get tickets from Frankfurt to Milan for €43,50 pP.
HOWEVER, these discount tickets are date and train specific, non-exchangeable and non-refundable. If you are flying into Europe that day and intend to use them right away, it's pretty risky. I've been on flights that were an hour late, and I have seen flights much more than that. It might be a good idea to "hole up" somewhere in the Frankfurt area (the middle Rhein comes to mind) for a day to make sure you can use the tickets.
