We will be in Spain from July 17-21 & want to see Barcelona, but also want to spend some time on the beach. Any suggestions of good beaches to visit and/or hotel reccomendations?

It has been a while since I have been to Barcelona but I loved Hotel Lleo near La Rambla and metro Plaza Catalunya. As for beaches, I think they are all nice now since they have Barceloneta set up. Enjoy.

When I was there I went to Sitges (recommended by Rick). It was lovely and well worth it. The beach is amazing, restaurants are great... From what I remember it's about a half hour by train from Barcelona.

The beaches in Barcelona are nice, from my view walking along them a couple of weeks ago. Search for hotels in the Barcelonetta area, that's closest to the beach.
